Listen: The Pre-Production Checklist That Saves Every Studio Day

Ask any producer what went wrong on a bad shoot day and you'll rarely hear about the camera. You'll hear about the decision nobody made — the backdrop color, the number of looks, who was approving the takes, whether the client wanted vertical cuts too.
Start at the end
Before you pick a stage, write down exactly what has to exist when the day is over. One hero spot and six cutdowns? A forty-minute episode plus ten clips? A photo set in three crops? Deliverables decide everything else: the space, the lenses, the lighting style and how many hours you really need.
Put the plan on paper
A studio day is paid for by the hour. Decisions are free — as long as you make them before you arrive.
- A shot list, ordered by setup rather than by script
- A floor plan showing where cameras, talent and video village sit
- A schedule that includes load-in, setup, lunch and teardown
- A contact sheet: who decides, who approves, who signs off
Share all of it with the studio. When the team knows your first setup, the room can be pre-lit and patched before you arrive.
Book the hours you'll actually use
Shooting time is not the same as studio time. Gear has to come in, lights have to be focused, sets have to be dressed and struck. Booking setup and teardown windows protects your shooting clock and the next production's start time.
Confirm 48 hours out
Two days before the shoot, confirm rentals, crew call times, parking, catering and anything the talent needs. It takes fifteen minutes and saves the panicked phone calls at 7 a.m.
The difference between a stressful shoot and a smooth one is almost always decided before anyone walks through the door.
