What Is REMI? How Networks Produce Live Shows Without a Truck — and How We Do It From Tampa Bay
The biggest change in live television over the last fifteen years isn't a camera.
It's that the control room stopped travelling.
The workflow is called REMI — Remote Integration Model. The director, the switcher, the graphics and the replay stay at the network's home plant. The cameras and the talent go wherever the story is. Only the camera feeds travel.
Networks adopted it to save money. They kept it because it works.
At Shear Media Studios in St. Petersburg, we're built to be the remote end of that workflow. This is what that means, and why it matters if you produce live sports, news or any show that can't afford to be late.
Every Live Show Has Two Pipes
People confuse these constantly, and the confusion costs money.
The first pipe goes to the viewer. That's streaming. One finished program, compressed hard, sent to a platform, delayed by seconds to half a minute. The delay is fine. Nobody is cutting the show at the other end.
The second pipe goes to the control room. That's contribution. Individual camera feeds, high quality, minimal delay, with talkback and return video running the other way. The director at the far end cuts between those cameras as if they were in the building.
A studio that can do the first thing often can't do the second.
If the picture is late or soft, the show breaks.
What REMI Actually Is
Strip away the jargon and REMI is simple:
Cameras and talent at the remote site — in our case, St. Petersburg
Production at the network's home control room — Chicago, London, Toronto, Sydney, wherever the gallery is
Every camera travels to that gallery in real time
The network cuts the show there
Program and confidence feeds come back to the floor here, so the talent sees what the network sees
Comms run both ways
That last part matters more than people think. A host who can't hear the director and can't see the program is guessing. REMI done right means nobody on the floor is guessing.
Why Sports Lives or Dies on It
Picture a sports network with a host in Florida reacting to a game happening somewhere else.
The host has to react in the truck's timeline. Seconds of delay and the banter is unusable. The network's director needs to choose the shot — which means they need every camera, not a picture somebody already cut. The host needs to see the game feed and the program output on a monitor in front of them.
Streaming can't do any of that. Contribution can.

When your ingest receives a feed from Studio G, it's receiving a signal that platform was designed to send.

How It Runs From Here
Shear Media Studios is approximately 15,000 square feet across two floors in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Studio G — 5,800 square feet, 18-foot ceiling, vehicle access. The multi-camera stage.
Studio A — 2,800 square feet, 180-degree white cyclorama, 14-foot lighting grid.
Main control room — the SMS gallery, for shows we cut here or as a backup cut.
Mini control rooms — for parallel productions or a producer's feed.
Five podcast configurations — any of them a REMI source.
On location — the same path can run from a venue.
We send real-time, multi-camera 4K to network control rooms in Chicago, London, Toronto and Sydney, with return video and comms back to the floor. Specific codec, transport and latency parameters are confirmed with your network engineer on the technical pre-call, because the right answer depends on your ingest, not ours.
The Question to Ask Any Studio
If you're evaluating a studio for a live network production, ask one question:
"Can you send my network every camera, in real time, with return video and comms?"
If the answer starts with "we can stream to…" — that's the other pipe.
If the answer is yes, ask when they last did a line check with a gallery on another continent.
